2007 Proves to be the Year of the Orange County Young Democrats

The Orange County Young Democrats experience unprecedented success and recognition at this year’s California Democratic Party convention

SANTA ANA, CA – The Orange County Young Democrats have elected one of their members as the president of their statewide organization, the California Young Democrats.

Tim Steed, the immediate past chair of OCYD, was elected President of the California Young Democrats.  He was elected at this year’s California Democratic Party Convention which was held April 27 through 29 in San Diego, CA.

Tim Steed is the first CYD President to be elected from Orange County.  Two other members of the Orange County Young Democrats were also elected to the CYD executive board.  Lindsay Hopkins was elected Vice President of Finance and Chris Roa was elected Region Director.

The Orange County Young Democrats were also awarded the CYD Chapter of the Year Award.  This award was presented because of the work done during the 2006 election.  The Orange County Young Democrats focused on peer to peer campaigning in order to convince people ages 14 to 35 to vote Democratic in the 34th Senate District.  Thousands of voters were contacted in what was last year’s most competitive state senate race.

Melahat Rafiei, the Political Director for the Democratic Party of Orange County, and a member of the Orange County Young Democrats, won the 2007 John F. Kennedy, Jr. Award. The John F. Kennedy Award is awarded by the California Democratic Party to a young person age 14 – 35 years old.

“As an Orange County Young Democrat I cannot wait to see what Tim, Lindsay and Chris have in store for us. I am really proud to be working amongst such dedicated activists. It's an exciting time to be a Young Democrat in Orange County,” said Ferial Govashiri, Chair of the Orange County Young Democrats.

The Orange County Young Democrats are an active part of local Democratic politics and strive to encourage political activism and participation among young people ages 14 to 35.
